In a former edition of this book we had written: "It's a sleepy city; the only attraction for tourists are the islets off the coast and the beaches towards the north which are suitable for swimming, snorkeling and picnicking but can only be gotten to by hired boat. There are no accommodations on beaches except at Dakak." The mayor of Dapitan City, James A. Adasa, has sent us the following correction: "Experience the enchantment of Dapitan and you will see and say, 'it is the place where Mother Nature is at its best.' Rain forests, sparkling seas, majestic sunset, serene mountains, clean and ivory beaches, fresh air, a hundred smiles... All yours for free in Dapitan. Truly a place where you will recapture the best times in your life. Dapitan is also very ideal for backpackers." While it isn't clear what makes Dapitan City a "very ideal" place for backpackers, when compared to other cities and towns of Mindanao, it must be pointed out that the particular mention of backpackers by Mayor Adasa suggests that shoestring travelers are officially welcome in this city - and that's already something. As a particular attraction for foreigners, Mayor Adasa mentions the city fiesta, held every year at the end of July. On the day first day of the fiesta, there is Sinug, described by Mayor Adasa as "a dance procession in honor of the city's patron saint, St. James the Great. It is the faithfuls' enduring expression of prayer and thanksgiving. Eye-dazzling costumes of devotees, unison shouts of 'Viva Señor Santiago' in rhythm with the solid resonance of drums and lively bands make Sinug colorful, exciting and memorable."On the same day as the Sinug, a play named Kinabayois given. According to Mayor Adasa, "the merging of historical, cultural and religious elements make the Kinabayo an intriguing and exotic festivity. Thus thousands go to Dapitan annually and witness the pageant re-enacting the Spanish-Moorish wars, particularly the battle of Covadonga wherein the Spanish forces' battle cry 'Santiago!' inspired them to victory." About the second day of the city fiesta, Mayor Adasa wrote: "Colorful buntings adorn the streets and the residents' hospitality is at its peak. Visitors are treated to a sumptuous banquet of Spanish, Filipino and the famous Crustacean dishes of Dapitan."
Obviously, the author, editor and researchers of Cockatoo's Handbook cannot attend every town or city fiesta throughout the archipelago. The fiesta of Dapitan certainly isn't yet a tourist attraction on one level with theAti-Atihan of Kalibo or the Moriones of Marinduque, but this may actually contribute to the originality and charm of the event. At the Ati-Atihan or Moriones, one is just one attending foreigner out of many. In Dapitan, one will most probably be just one out of a few - and if there would be many more, the special treatment suggested by Mayor Adasa would probably not be affordable any more. Except at the Dakak Beach Resort (see below), there is still no regular accommodation available in Dapitan City. Major Adasa informed Cockatoo Press in mid-1991 of the following possibilities: There is the Dapitan Homestay Program with an office at Noli Me Tangere St which can arrange accommodation in family homes. Accommodation may also be available at theBajamunde Farm Hall at Lawa-an and at Beb Tan Enterprises on Bonifacio Avenue. Through Yayang's Store at Bagting, accommodation at the Tangi-an Beach Resort can be arranged. As Mayor Adasa seems to be so committed to forward the touristic development of Dapitan - why not take a tricycle to the city hall and request his personal help? Philippines / West Mindanao / Dapitan and vicinity / Dakak Beach Resort This luxury resort, 9 kilometers north of Dapitan, spreads over 15 hectares (37 acres) and has 100 air-conditioned cottages. Each bamboo cottage has its own porch (facing the sea), a dressing room, private bath (with hot and cold shower), in-house communication, TV, FM radio, and is fully carpeted. The resort's 700m (750yd) white-sand beach is popular for swimming, wind surfing or hobbie cats. A number of near-by reefs for example at Kanlu Kani and theAligway and Sulnog Islands invite the snorkeler or diver. They are all internationally tested and accredited sites. Other facilities of the resort include a swimming pool of warm spring water, two open-air Jacuzzis (one spring water and the other sea water), a tennis court, billiard table, ten-pin bowling alley, horses for riding and a hiking trail. Hiking and nature walks are popular as there aremonkeys and deer among the fauna as well as many trees, shrubs and flowers to be found in the surrounding flora. Nearby is a typical Filipino barrio (village) with acockpit. The resort planned to develop a secluded white-sand beach for those who really want to get back to nature - nude. For the gourmet there are sea food specialties in the dining room, Port Orient, snacks and meriendas at theVerandah or refreshments at the soda shop. There are slated outdoor parties on moonlit evenings - Hawaiian luau, American cookout, ethnic, or Filipiniana. ThePirate's Bar is a reconstructed ship-wrecked galleon sunk in a man-made lagoon. There is also a large TV screen to see video tapes of recent or classic films. Postal, laundry, massage, foreign exchange and baby sitting services are offered as well as the treatments of a beauty and barber shop and a medical and dental clinic. For spiritual needs, there is a chapel.

Most travelers going to or coming overland from Zamboanga will have to change buses here. There are no express buses to the southeast. The stretch to Cotabato has to be done town-hopping by jeepney. Accommodation

Zamboanga City is the economic center of western Mindanao. Its position of being the cultural center of the region, however, is challenged by Marawi City which is more important to the Muslim population. The settlement of Zamboanga was founded about 800 A.D. by the Sama-Badjaos (sea gypsies) as the Sama term sambuanan (a mooring place) is the possible forerunner of the city's name. Even today if one dines atLantaka Hotel by the Sea, the sea gypsies sell their wares from boats.Zamboanga's population is half Christian, half Muslim, and preserved in the city are Muslim as well as Spanish traditions. The local dialect, Chabacano, has the most Spanish words or words of Spanish origin of all Philippine dialects. For the city's economy the port is of paramount importance. There is barter with the neighboring Muslim countries which is tax free. Zamboanga is furthermore a center of smuggling activities in goods that are not privileged to barter trade.
The city is heavily militarized, and there are numerouscheck points. The Zamboanga way of life is tension-filled. Cinemas have last shows at about 17:00, and restaurants close around 21:00. Many people are distrustful of foreigners.
Apart from this the city does have its charm. Around the Lantaka hotel there are tree-bordered streets not unpleasant for strolling, and the Lantaka Hotel itself has a pleasant atmosphere. Pasonanca Park - located out of downtown Zamboanga, 15 minutes by jeepney; a beautiful park with the defunct Zamboanga Plaza Hotel & Convention Center, with casino and three swimming pools. All facilities were sequestered with the change of the government in 1986, because they were Marcos property. Rio Hondo - Mosque (70) - eastern Zamboanga; there is a famous mosque in Rio Hondo, a Moslem water village with old houses, built on stilts over the sea Fort Pilar and Aquatic Life Museum (69) - An old Spanish fort, built in 1635 by a Jesuit priest to ward off attacks from the Moros and foreign invaders. The fort is located at the seaside to the south of the city. Within the fort is an interesting museum on the aquatic life of the seas around the Philippines. Nice display of shell and coral specimens. Great & Small Sta Cruz Island - 4km (2.5mi) off Zamboanga, accessible by pump boat, for hire (P 100) at the Lantaka Hotel; boats usually leave in the morning (5-6 persons per boat) and return in the afternoon; it is not advisable to start the excursion in the afternoon, as the water currents are stronger at that time; visitors should bring their own food and water, as none are available on the islands. December 8 - Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Zamboanga; feast day of the city Philippines / West Mindanao / Transportation Land Transportation The most important bus terminal in Zamboanga is at Veterans Ave corner Governor Camins Rd, out of the city; buses go frequently (mostly in the morning) toPagadian. From there are connections to Ozamiz, Dipolog, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.
There is an hourly ferry service from Ozamiz to Kolambugan and Tubod (last trip 17:00) where buses wait at the pier. Roads in western Mindanao have a poor reputation - and not just that, as the locals are quite afraid of bandits. Most people prefer to take ships or fly, and the same is recommended to foreign visitors.
Flights PAL has two flights daily between Zamboanga andManila. Other connections between western Mindanao and Manila exist only via Cebu City.There are one or two flights daily between Zamboanga and Cebu City, and additionally flights between Cebu City and Ozamiz (daily), Dipolog (three times a week) and Pagadian (four times a week).
